The Annual Spending On Renewable Energy - 1420 Words

â€Å"The annual spending on renewable energy by the Department of Defense (DOD) will reach $10 billion by 2030† (Schueneman). Right now the military proves to be one of the highest consumers of renewable energy. They are also responsible for using and burning the most fossil fuels in the entire country. The DoD realizes this and that’s why they are working so hard to become a greener military. In order to enhance the security of the American people and to address the every changing requirements of sustainability, the U.S. military is urgently trying to reduce its footprint on the world.. The military is constantly trying to produce cleaner power, reduce energy consumption, minimize waste and most importantly manage water. Admiral John Nathman, USN (Ret.), former Commander of the U.S. Fleet Forces Command under President G eorge W. Bush, put it this way: â€Å"There are serious risks to doing nothing about climate change. We can pay now or we’re going to pay a whole lot later. The U.S. has a unique opportunity to become energy independent, protect our national security and boost our economy while reducing our carbon footprint. We’ve been a model of success for the rest of the world in the past and now we must lead the way on climate change† (Schueneman) The military as a whole has realized that their sustainability efforts haven’t been the best and they are doing enormous amounts of work to change that. Some may argue that the DoD isn’t concerned about sustainability because the Pentagon generates five times more toxins than the five major US chemical companies combined and is considered the single largest domestic consumer of oil (Sustainability). In all actuality the DoD and the Pentagon is well aware of this. That is why they are pushing for these huge sustainability changes. They know that they are a large role model and in order to change the image of the U.S. they first need to change their own image.
